Summer in the desert will test both you and your van. Without hookups you need to get creative to keep the inside cool enough to survive. I have spent weeks in desert heat and learned what works and what is a waste of space.
Park Smart
Where you park makes a big difference. I look for shade in the morning and move the van as the sun shifts. Even a few hours out of direct sunlight helps.
Use Reflective Window Covers
Reflective covers on the windshield and windows block a huge amount of heat. They are cheap, light, and easy to store when not in use. [Link to product]
Ventilation
I run a roof vent fan all day to pull hot air out. In the evening I open side windows to get cross flow. Air movement is the difference between bearable and miserable. [Link to product]
Cook Outside
Cooking inside will raise the temperature fast. I set up my portable stove outside whenever possible. It keeps the heat out and makes cleanup easier. [Link to product]
Cold Soak Items
I keep water bottles in my fridge and use them as cold packs at night. It is a simple trick but it makes sleeping much more comfortable.
Plan Your Day Around the Heat
I do more driving in the hottest part of the day so I can run the van’s AC. Early mornings and evenings are for being parked and relaxing.
Why This Works
None of these steps alone will keep a van cool in extreme heat. Together they make it possible to handle desert conditions without hookups.
